Last we spoke I was crapping on about integrated GPS systems in dashboards and it whet my whistle for more technology so I started a list of interesting new technology and quickly realised there is a lot more to cover right now than just GPS dashboards, or hoverboards for that matter. So here is my list of 10 Advancements in Technology for Motorcyclists.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Skully Helmet<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a brilliant idea. HUD, rear view vision, LED dark switch visor, the Skully AR-1 has it. But there is one problem. No-one has got one yet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0statement made by the company\u00a0recently they promised they would be shipping by the holidays this year, let\u2019s hope they can deliver because\u00a0I reckon this is the most promising\u00a0tech I\u2019ve seen in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written about some of the other integrated helmet HUD\u00a0things before so let\u2019s move on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Skwal<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I stumbled upon this helmet \u2013 the Skwal \u2013 made by Shark, it has integrated LEDs built into the front and the back of the actual helmet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"entered lazyloading exited\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sSwIZUYCEos\" width=\"873\" height=\"491\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sSwIZUYCEos\" data-ll-status=\"entered\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Does it get any more Tron than that?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I actually like it. But I don\u2019t know if it will achieve anything like increased visibility to other\u00a0riders\u00a0and le-sigh, cagers, or just look super cool; like these jazzy images from their site that explain it all perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See the\u00a0Shark site for more info, or just in case you aren\u2019t sure yet, here is another brilliant piece of art that should help explain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Ducati DVT (Desmodromic Variable Timing)<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While it is beyond my technical ability to give you any real knowledge, I understand it to be a significant leap forward for Ducati being able to independently control valve input and output timing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Desmodromic Variable Timing (DVT) uses hydraulically operated camshaft-phasers (two for each heads) to manipulate camshaft position relative to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailybikers.com\/best-dirt-bike-sprockets\">sprocket<\/a> connected to the timing belt and therefore vary valve timing. They are on both the intake and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailybikers.com\/best-dirt-bike-exhaust\">exhaust<\/a> camshaft.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Means it goes heaps faster, more smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cornering ABS<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If ABS wasn\u2019t already enough to get to deal with, some clever people\u00a0at Bosch went ahead and developed \u2018Cornering ABS\u2019 back in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BMW have adapted it, and call it ABS Pro and it now comes in a range of 2016 models.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest Ducati Multistrada matches it blow for blow with\u00a0their version of DSP (Dynamic Safety Pack).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Developed initially by Bosch\u00a0in conjunction with Ducati, in laymen\u2019s terms a computer makes regular rapid assessments of your cornering lean angle and wheel speed, and applies brake pressure allowing you to concentrate on turning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sounds totally whack to me, but so did ABS a few years ago until I learnt how good it was living with\u00a0the Multistrada. The mind boggles at exactly what this weird cornering braking system will actually feel like on a\u00a0bike,\u00a0but I\u2019m positive it will help ham-fisted front brakers who tend to panic brake mid corner \u2013 in the rain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cornering headlights<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only bike I could find this actually fitted on right now was the\u00a0BMW K 1600 GT and GTL.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether you \u2018get it\u2019 or not,\u00a0if you have ridden at night you know that as you tip your bike the lights naturally illuminate the wrong part of the corner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not any more, BMW the clever clogs have developed \u2018adaptive headlight technology\u2019 that means that the headlight tilts according to your lean angle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Neato Magilla Guerilla.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>LED daytime running lights<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Daytime running lights improve your visibility to cagers, and although it\u2019s no mind bending tech, it\u2019s kind of a new thing to me, a guy who grew up in the country\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220517002903\/https:\/\/dailybikers.com\/2017\/07\/3-tips-to-live-longer-riding-motorcycles.html\">riding<\/a>\u00a0XT Yamahas and other such drum brake enabled machines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the image below, that strip running down the centre is a LED daytime running light as found on the S1000XR.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s blindingly bright, and pretty cool looking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Keyless ignition<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had a\u00a0bad Ducati experience with Keyless ignition, but Steve assures me the BMW Keyless ignition is much better, and let\u2019s hope so as keys really are SUCH a bother.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only kidding, but seriously who would of thought twenty\u00a0years ago that we wouldn\u2019t even need to put a key in an ignition barrle to start our bike? Not me, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>DSS Ducati Skyhook Suspension<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t exactly new and is slowly becoming more commonplace yet and I thought worthy of a mention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is basically electronic active suspension for telescopic forks. Skyhook Susupension sounds way better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More computer controlled wizardry that I currently have in the S1000R and it really is nothing short of amazing. Here is a\u00a0good summary from Ducati on what their DSS is, and does.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>DCT for Honda Africa Twin<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Loads of brands are dragging New out of the Old, and the Africa Twin -Honda CRF1000L\u00a0is no different, although Honda have decidedly upped the ante with the new Africa Twin \u2013 a 1000cc parallel twin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The most intriguing part however is DCT (Honda Dual Clutch Transmission) as an option for the new Africa Twin. It acts like an automatic gearbox without the need for any clutch or upshifts. It can also do a weird thing where you can change gears via a button on the bars. Wicked!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Dynamic\u00a0Brake Lights<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea of\u00a0Dynamic Brake Lights\u00a0is to warn other drivers that you are braking harder than usual.\u00a0It comes\u00a0with ABS Pro, the cornering ABS system I mentioned above. I am a bit baffled by what it does, activating in two stages \u2013 the first one when you brake above 50km phr and the second stage when the vehicle slows below 12km phr and apparently flashing your hazards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Both these safety features are part of the\u00a0Ride Modes Pro package, which will be available as an option for the 2016 \u00a0models: R1200GS, R1200GS <a href=\"https:\/\/dailybikers.com\/10-reasons-why-dirt-biking-is-the-ultimate-outdoor-adventure\/\">Adventure<\/a>, S1000XR and come as standard on the K1600GT\u00a0&amp; GTL\u00a0luxury tourers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My only hesitation about this unique idea is,\u00a0how\u00a0will anyone know what a flashing brake light means on a motorcycle? Cagers certainly won\u2019t have read or heard about this new tech so what will they think it means? Broken tail lights? No word on it making here to Australia anyway, so we\u2019ll wait and see.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And just last of all to top of a huge week in motorcycling, check out the\u00a0latest sales figures on motorcycles\u00a0Down Under.
